Objectives
1. STUDENT
ACHEIVEMENT
Objective: My personal goal is to increase student achievement in my classes, especially students who are consistently at or near failing and students who face unique challenges due to their cultural identity (BAMMS goal).
Measure: I will be able to measure student achievement by the counting the number of students each trimester who get D’s and F’s, specifically in Algebra II. I will compare trimesters, looking for improvement over the course of the year. I will compare this year’s Algebra II class to last year’s class:
2003-2004: Fall (2 D’s, no F’s)/Spring
(1 D, no F’s)
Target: A fair measure of success for me would be a 100% improvement by the end of the year in the D’s and F’s category. Any improvement of 3 or more students will be a success, but in fairness, the target should be zero D’s and F’s in all my classes.
Strategies: I will help students stay organized by checking notebooks frequently. I will also post grades on a weekly basis by student ID in order to ensure confidentiality. I will give students opportunities to raise their grades at any point in the term with alternative assignments, but they will also always know what to do to catch up by following the calendar I give them and seeing their grade in the grade book. Finally, I will increase my communication with homes by keeping a close watch on the frequency of my calls and emails.
2. LEARNING
Objective: I will focus this year on helping students understand graphing as a visual representation of solution sets to algebraic equations. (dept. goal)
Measure: I will pay close attention to this year’s Graphing Unit assessments and class activities. For example, at least one activity and test question from each unit should include the topic’s relationship to graphical understanding. Student understanding will be measured according to the grading rubrics already in use.
Target: Students will become proficient on tests and quizzes dealing with graphing problems. All students will show that they understand the concept that graphs are a visual representation of multiple solutions.
Strategies: I will incorporate
daily warm-ups that help students understand the nature of graphical
representations and add graphing requirements to most problems. Graphing problems should also be accompanied
by a student’s explanation of the concepts.
I will add questions to each test dealing with the graphical nature of
functions.
3. CLASSROOM
MANAGEMENT
Objective: I will improve on my
ability to manage the classroom, providing for a more conducive learning
environment for all students.
Measure: To measure my classroom management goals I will note the
periods in which all students are attentive and engaged in class
activities. I will also keep track of my
contacts to homes on the Groupwise system, and count
the frequency of notebook checks and grade postings that I perform. In addition, I will use “on-task” charts
created by different observers.
Throughout the year, I will also measure the amount of “wait time” it
takes for students to respond to my calls for their attention.
Target: Ideally, all students will be attentive and engaged in class
activity throughout the whole period every day.
That is my target. I will have
made improvement if at least 4 out of the 5 days of the week, all students are
attentive and engaged. In addition, a
target for managing my contacts home would be for the contacts to exceed the
number of students who are having behavior issues plus the number of unexcused
absences. “Wait time” will decrease
throughout the year as well.
Strategies: To improve my class management, I will begin each class with a math problem, set clear guidelines and clear consequences, enforce those consequences promptly and consistently, and establish more contact with students’ homes. Also, I will help students stay more organized and connected with my classroom by creating a notebook checking system that allows 2 days to get organized from the time of a notebook check until I call home. Also, I will make sure to have grades posted weekly beginning after the 3rd week of the term. In addition, students will be able to evaluate themselves according to strict criteria.
