Educational Philosophy

High school students are at pivotal points in their lives; they are in their early stages of becoming adults.  At such a critical time in their lives, it is important to teach them the value of mathematical thinking and application.  I believe that everyone has an inquisitive nature, and all math is relevant to all students.  Therefore I strongly pursue engaging curriculum, build meaningful mentoring relationships with the students, and instill a sense of hopeful excitement for what lies ahead in all my students.

I do not believe that math is for a select population.  Gardner’s research on the various intelligences permeates my teaching methods as I work to make each student reach their potential.  I try to differentiate instruction in the way I design lessons, orchestrate activities and create assessments.  My lessons are designed with a backwards design mentality, in which the big idea of each unit is my starting point.  I also attempt to make my teaching accessible to all students regardless of their uniqueness.  For example, I use internet technology to provide assignments to my students anywhere in the world.
