This Artifact provides evidence of the following Indicators:

Standard C.4:  Manages classroom routines and procedures without loss of significant instructional time.

 Introductory Statement

Below is an excerpt from an observation done by my practicum supervisor.  This was one of my less productive classes, and that is made clear.  However, she did notice that I had managed the class better the time before, and this is highlighted.

I am working hard to find methods that work for both me and my students.  I've found that writing the day's schedule as a to do list helps.  Making clear what I expect as far as behavior and time management  is also important.

Notes: Overall, this class did not run as smoothly as the other class that I observed. There seemed to be several key areas for improvement.

First, in your pre-observation form, you mentioned that part of what you wanted me to observe was whether or not the project directions were clear. Also, you said, "are the students absolutely certain of the task before them?" I thought this was not made clear, at all, to your students. Before they began the project, you gave them 3 simultaneous directions. After that, there was never any repetition of the directions and you never gave a clear signal for them to begin working. This caused some groups to wait until you physically walked over to their group to tell them to begin. These groups lost a lot of class time. Next time, consider asking them to pass in their homework. Once it is all collected, ask them to take out their projects (since they had already started). Then, give them the amount of time they will have to work. Let them know (as you said at the very end of the class) that this is the only other class day they will have to work on this project. Finally, explain what you would like them to have completed by the end of the day.

The last class that I observed of you, you did this very well. You had given clear directions, repeatedly reminded students of their time remaining, and made clear what was expected of them during the time they were working.

 Reflective Statement

I don't feel like I've mastered this standard.  I have found only a few strategies to manage classroom procedure effectively.  For example, I write a to do list and I make everyone be quiet before I proceed.  The difficult part is meeting everyone's needs during such a short period.

One way to improve at managing time in class is to speak more authoritatively and clearly.
