This Artifact provides evidence of the following Indicators:

Standard D.3:  Assesses the significance of student differences in home experiences, background knowledge, learning skills, learning pace, and proficiency in the English language for learning the curriculum at hand and uses professional judgment to determine if instructional adjustments are necessary.

 Introductory Statement

The following is an assignment that has been translated into Portuguese.  I have had numerous students who have recently immigrated from Cape Verde, and they are provided with a tutor or translates much of the material.  I have a collection of translated assignments that I can give to students who need them.

The ELL department usually determines whether or not a student needs a translator, but I do my best to challenge students to learn the English language by challenging themselves.

 Reflective Statement

Math is a subject that makes it easier to cross language barriers.  However, there are many verbal aspects of math that are difficult to communicate in a classroom of various language backgrounds.  At the very least, I try to write down what I say and repeat the important concepts.

I could improve by having a written copy of everything I teach, and I have already begun organizing this on my computer.
