Standard F.E: Connections

 Introductory Statement

This is an activity that introduces students to the concept of variation.  It is the type of activity that can be entered by students at any level, but stimulates thinking about direct and inverse variation.  The remainder of the unit uses data found in this activity to study the concept of variation equations.

As I taught this unit, I repeatedly referred back to the "Banquet Tables data," and students were able to make connections based on prior knowledge.  It is important in math to connect the various units so that students build a knowledge base rather than unconnected bits of information.

Activity: Banquet Tables

 Reflective Statement

I've found that overarching problems that cover the whole unit help build connections.  I am working to find and create some more of these.
