Standard F.A.4: Measurement

 Introductory Statement

This activity, called "Falling Objects," involves dropping objects and timing their descent before hitting the ground.  Highly interactive, students work in groups to discover the type of variation that occurs when gravity works on an object.  I use this to introduce the chapter on direct and inverse variation functions.

In this activity, students will discover a direct variation between an object's height and the time of its descent.  They will learn to use formulas to make predictions.  Accurate measurement of time and height are critical to gathering usable data.

Activity: "Falling Objects"

 Reflective Statement

Students actually enjoy measurement because it involves their hands, so I like to integrate this into my lessons.  It takes a long time, so I don't do it very often.

I could use measurement in more activities if it didn't take so long.  I need to research to find some quick projects involving measurement.
