Standard F.A.1: Number and Operations

 Introductory Statement

This project, called "Four Fours," is a famous one in which students use different operations between four 4's in order to calculate every possible whole number up to 25.  I have set it up with a rubric and clear expectations for the student to work on it at home.

This is a project designed to challenge, practice and strengthen the student's skills in arithmetic, specifically order of operations.  I use it at the beginning of the term in Algebra I as an assessment.   I believe it is an enjoyable and challenging activity designed specifically for understanding numbers and operations.

Project: "Four Fours"

 Reflective Statement

This standard is foundational to math, and students enter my class with a prior understanding of this.  I create review lessons and worksheets that stress operations, but I don't teach units on it.  These reviews seem to be very helpful.
