Standard F.A.2: Patterns, Functions, and Algebra

 Introductory Statement

           This activity, called "Explicit Sequences," takes students through the process of recognizing patterns and devising explicit (or closed) formulas for sequences.  It relates sequences to geometry and word problems.

           This activity is designed to introduce students to algebraic functions through patterns.  It challenges students to think critically and algebraically.

 Reflective Statement

     I begin my algebra II class with a unit on patterns and relate them to algebraic formulas.  It helps them relate abstract concepts to concrete things.  It is a challenge to teach students abstract concepts, and patterns help.
