Statement
This activity, called "Indy 500," requires students to critically
analyze an interval of data taken from the World Almanac. They will
graph the data and determine the type of function (linear). I use this
activity to strengthen algebra students' skills at determining "best fit"
formulas for lines and making predictions.
This
activity draws out some interesting conclusions about sets of data that
appear to be linear. Students learn at the end of the lesson that
statistically, the trend of race car speeds does not continue to follow a
linear pattern.
