Standard F.A.5: Data Analysis, Statistics and Probability

 Introductory Statement

This activity, called "Indy 500," requires students to critically analyze an interval of data taken from the World Almanac.  They will graph the data and determine the type of function (linear).  I use this activity to strengthen algebra students' skills at determining "best fit" formulas for lines and making predictions.

This activity draws out some interesting conclusions about sets of data that appear to be linear.  Students learn at the end of the lesson that statistically, the trend of race car speeds does not continue to follow a linear pattern.

 Reflective Statement

Probability and statistics are my favorite topics in math because of their mysterious applications to real life.  I try to incorporate them as much as possible, but there is no class specifically on statistics.  Students benefit from lessons on probability and MCAS warmup problems help.
