Recreate
this WaterYear logo using Illustrator. This activity will introduce
you to gradients, transparency,
and outlining strokes.

1. Download
the WaterYear logo and immediately save it in your
folder. Remember
to save every 15 minutes or so.
2. Create a new
layer and name it "drop."
3. Trace
the drop using the pen tool. Initially, use a stroke that isn't
blue. You should have 7 anchor points. Use the
white arrow tool to make adjustments.

4. To fill the shape with the gradient, slide the
outlined shape to the right and press the gradient
fill button. The image will fill with a grayscale gradient.

Double-click on the gradient palette tab
to expand the palette.

Click on the small white square and then use the
eyedropper to select the light blue.
Be sure to HOLD the SHIFT button
on the keyboard when you click on the light blue,
otherwise you will lose the gradient.

7.
Click on the black square and click on the dark
blue with the eyedropper tool. Once again,
be sure to press the shift button on the keyboard.

8.
Change the angle of the gradient to 90
degrees.
9.
Adjust the balance of the gradient by sliding the
black diamond. You probably want to slide it to
the right.
10.
Turn the stroke off and slide the large shape to
the left so that it covers up the raster image.
11. Turn the drop
layer off.
12. Create a new layer and name it "waves."
13. Trace the wave shapes
along the center of them with the pen tool.
14. Change the stroke
thickness to 15 pts on the stroke
palette.. Press the "rounded caps"
button to make the ends of the path rounded. The "Miter Limit"
doesn't matter.

15. On the color
palette, set the color of the top wave
to C24 M4 Y4 K0. Change the transparency
to 65%

16. Draw the second
wave. The color is C70 M45 Y5 K5. Make
sure the transparency is also 65%

17. Draw the bottom
wave. The color is C75 M35 Y5 K0. Transparency
is 65%

18. Make a text box with the type tool
and type the words "WaterYear2003".The
font for the text is"Myriad Bold" size
70. the tracking must be at -75.

19. The proper shade of blue for the text can be
found on the swatches palette.

20. Turn the drop
layer back on.
Your finished
WaterYear logo should look like this:

21. Flatten
the file.
22. Group
the shapes together.
23. Save
it in the "Finished WaterYear" folder
as your last name.
