Due Tues., 5/22: TYPED ROUGH DRAFT of 1st Generalization with (Parenthetical Cites) & Works Cited -- USE MLA HANDOUT to ensure CORRECT FORMAT (e.g., READ the top of the handout as well as use the models)!   REVIEW the CHECKLIST to ensure you are meeting the requirements.  Identify 3 options for your 2nd generalization:  it must be a different level and basically NOT overlap with your 1st generalization topic.  In class: by end of class, approval of 2nd topic & level.

Due Wed., 5/30:  Read Mingst, Ch 9 230-238 on the U.N (start Historical Perspective - stop at Realism and Int'l Law) AND Ch. 7 164-166 about two generations of peacekeeping.  TAKE OUTLINE NOTES on the main ideas/evidence in the reading.  BRING IR READER TO CLASS.

Due Thurs., 5/31: Read article on Bosnian Civil War and TAKE DETAILED NOTES.  Use assignment sheet for Case Study to guide you.  In class: DVD on Peacekeeping: Why the UN Failed in Bosnia -- REQUIRED for Graded Discussion tomorrow.

Due Fri., 6/1: Read 2 articles: "Call in the Blue Helmets" and Madeleine Albright's "United Nations."  TAKE OUTLINE NOTES.  GRADED DISCUSSION IN CLASS ON BOSNIAN CIVIL WAR CASE STUDY -- based on 3 articles and, especially, on the DVD on peacekeeping and Bosnia.

Due Mon., 6/4:    Read Basic Facts About the UN & TAKE OUTLINE NOTES.  Read Assignment handouts:   UN Simulation: Preliminary Directions/Initial Agenda & UN Simulation: Expectations.  Review Checklist for UN Sim Project Assessment to get an overview of EXPECTATIONS.  You must have a strong handle on the process and steps of the UN Simulation as well as a general sense of the organization of the UN and the role of the Committees.

Due Mon., 4/2: Competing Visions Assignment.  Read the one-page intro article (IR Reader, p. 31) that everyone is reading -- TAKE NOTES to identify important trends.  READ the additional article assigned to you. Click here for YOUR assigned article.  TAKE NOTES using the Hwk Questions on the Competing Visions Assignment handout.  In class: you will present your article.  Everyone needs to know these 4 articles well!  BRING READER.

Due Mon., 4/9: Read the “CQ Researcher" Background article (China packet, pp. 630-636) from August 4th, 2000.  Take Outline Notes, per the directions in the The U.S. and China: A Case Study handout.  BE READY TO PRESENT IN CLASS.

Due Tues., 4/10: Read "CQ Researcher: US-China Relations, the Issues” article from May 7th 2010 (China packet, pp. 409-423).  Take Outline Notes, per the directions in the The U.S. and China: A Case Study... handout.  In class: see film REQUIRED for upcoming Graded Discussion: China Inside and Out: New World Power, Old World Politics.

Due Wed., 4/11: Finish "CQ Researcher: US-China Relations, the Issues” article from May 7th 2010 AND Read “CQ Researcher Update: US China Relations” May 24th, 2011 (China packet, pp. 424-end).  Take Outline Notes, per the directions in the The U.S. and China: A Case Study handout.  PREPARE for GRADED DISCUSSION, per your assigned roles (if you sit near window:  Realist from China & Liberal from U.S;  If you sit near door side:  Realist from U.S. and Liberal from China).  Sources for Graded Discussion:  all China readings/notes, China DVD, & Mingst textbook as well as Thurs reading, Rourke Ch 6 hwk.  BRING READER & TEXTBOOK TO CLASS.

Due Thurs., 4/26:  Contending Perspectives QUIZ. (primarily Mingst Chap. 3, but will touch upon Rourke and China as well).  See below for Essay Question on Quiz. BRING MINGST TEXT TO CLASS.

Political scientists generally view politics from one of three perspectives:  realism, idealism/liberalism, and radicalism.  Select any contemporary or historical international political event and explain it from the perspective of one of the three theoretical orientations.  Be sure you demonstrate your understanding of the theoretical framework as well as suggest specific policy recommendations aligned with the chosen perspective.

Due Tues., 5/8:  Finish Background reading on Saudi Arabia in Reader.  TAKE NOTES using the Questions on the Assignment handout:  Saudi Arabia State Level Analysis.    In class:  Saudi presentations based on film and readings (Mingst Ch. 5 and Saudi bkgd.).

Due Wed., 5/9: Mingst Chap. 4, pp. 83-91 (stop at Stratification) & TAKE OUTLINE NOTES on the main ideas/evidence in the reading.  Be able to answer the Guiding Questions on first page of chapter.  In class: Read Afghanistan article & TAKE NOTES: Be able to identify each author's thesis, including specific supporting evidence. Which do you agree with and why?  How do they incorporate the concept of "polarity."?  BRING IR READER to CLASS

A statement is comprised of one long paragraph stating your country's position on the resolution and why.  Below the paragraph must be a bulleted list of research-based evidence that supports/enhances this position.  You need a typed statement for EACH resolution as follows: Authors of resolutions  -- EACH of you should have this -- coordinate so you have: statements to present/"sell" your resolution to the General Assembly (G.A.).   Non-Authors: When NOT an author you need: Statements for General Assembly clearly stating your country's position and why, including the bulleted list of research-based evidence.  RETURN IR Text and Reader.  SEND ME ANY FINAL RESOLUTIONS THAT HAVE PASSED & ARE READY TO BE COPIEDSend to me asap:   leopoldr@arps.org  -- need to be able to make copies before school starts.
