Due Wed., 1/4:  Prep info for your SKIT (e.g., make a list or circle in 2.3/2.4 notes):  What makes your culture distinctive?  ID key characteristics and achievements.  Hamza:  ;you should do the Persians.  STUDY FOR TEST.  See 1/3/12.   Remember to Preview Library Books for Topics -- see Fri., 1/6/12.  In class:  prep and perform skits.

Due Fri., 1/6:  Preview Library Books for at least 15 minutes for the Early Civilizations Research Project..  Fill out the Preliminary Topic Choice handout with your 3 possible topics, in order of priority (1st choice, 2nd, etc.).  Ensure your topics are not too broad (all of ancient Egypt), nor too narrow (Hittite weapons).  Be sure there are multiple sources on these topics, including in-depth sources. Bring to class - you need teacher approval for your final topic.   GET 3x5 NOTE CARDS.  In class:  TEST on UNIT I, Historical Method and the Ancient Near East: Key Questions and TermsRETURN P &C TEXTBOOK to Room 325.

Preliminary Topic Choice

Writing an Outline Formal Outline Guidelines,   Outline Checklist

Background Essay:  3-4 pages (NOT longer), double spaced, 12 pt font, Times New Roman.

Final Research Paper:  6-8 pages (MAX. 10 pages, NO exceptions), double spaced, 12 point font, Times New Roman.

Note Taking:  Use proper format, per handouts.  Bib. Cards:  You MUST create a BIB Card for EACH source, using proper MLA format.  On your BIB Card you need to note the source's strengths and weaknesses; be specific, such as what topics are covered.  See your handout on Annotated Bib for more info.   See helpful handouts on Note and Bib Cards and MLA Bib formats.   Also can see links to left in References and Resources.

SAVE Graded Bkgd Essay  and Graded Outline to turn in again as well as all your note and bib cards.

Week of 1/9/12

Due Mon., 1/9:  Begin background research on your topic.  You should take notes (MLA FORMAT) for at least 45 min. to one hour.  Use one or more of the library databases (Ancient & Medieval from Facts on File, Britannica Academic, World History in Context, etc. -- Do NOT use Wikipedia).   You MUST take notes using proper MLA format for note cards.  You MUST create a BIB Card for EACH source, using proper MLA format.  On your BIB Card you need to note the source's strengths and weaknesses; be specific, such as what topics are covered.  See your handout on Annotated Bib for more info.   See helpful handouts on Note and Bib Cards and MLA Bib formats.   Also can see links to left in References and Resources.  In addition, review all research project handouts carefully, so you are fully ready to begin research in the library today.  Check your calendar of deadlines frequently and plan ahead.   Link to calendar posted above.

Due Wed., 1/11:  Typed Prelim Bib.

BACKGROUND ESSAY REMINDERS.   Covers both time period/big picture historical context as well as your specific topic.  Title: your Research Question. Strong intro that provides overview of the bkgd. essay.  Body paragraphs each begin with a topic sentence.  Conclusion summarizes the bkgd. essay.  Include parenthetical citations, when needed.  Be sure to include specific years to track chronology clearly.  Bibliography in proper MLA format on a new page, last page.   Write clearly, so someone unfamiliar with your topic could follow your background essay.

Due Mon., 2/6:  Review your Outline and Feedback Comments carefully and Write your Action Plan by completing the Research Revision Plan chart.  Then make Progress on Rough Draft, per your Research Revision Plan as well as the comments on your Bkgd. Essay and your Outline.  Review your Rough Draft handouts:  Checklist: Outine>Rough Draft>Final; Rough Draft Guidelines; and Rough Draft Review.  Also use your Written Work Formant and Formal Style Guide handouts (see References & Resources to the left for links).  In class: DVD, The Greeks: Crucible of Civilization.

East African Coast Cities & Ethiopia Group, bib info for Shillington articles: History of Africa by Kevin Shillington, 2nd edition, published by Palgrave Macmillan in 2005, publisher is in New York.

Remember: if you don't have full info from an article, try looking its book up in our library or the Five College library catalog -- it should then provide missing info such as publisher, city, year, etc.

Due Tues., 5/15 ALL Africa Fair Exhibits & Annotated Bib.  In class: AFRICA FAIR  -- ATTENDANCE IS ESSENTIAL!!!    Must be set up at the start of class.  We will be relocated to room 177 due to MCAS.  Remember to bring your "Myths & Stereotypes" handouts in case there is time to start homework.

Due Wed., 5/16: Myths & Stereotypes article and Questions.   In class: DVD clip "Different But Equal" -- IMPORTANT for Myths & Stereotypes Essay.

Due Thurs., 5/17: In-class: Africa Reflection Essay during one class period in computer lab 303.  Can bring: Outline, per directions here, as well as your articles, notes from fair, notes from films, notes from readings/hwk.  OUTLINE should be a formal outline that is mapped out by paragraph and includes your thesis statement and analytic topic sentences and evidence for each body paragraph.  Except for the thesis statement and topic sentences, the outline is NOT in complete sentences.  The Outline MUST INCLUDE PARENTHETICAL CITATIONS with ORIGINAL PAGE #s - PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME.  Use AS MANY SOURCES AS POSSIBLE from the 1/2 sheet, at minimum over 50%.
