Russian Program Overview

Five years of Russian study are offered at the Middle School and High School. Novice I and II Russian are taught at the Middle School, and the rest of the classes at the high school, though this may change depending on demand.

The Novice I and II program is designed to especially cater to the needs of the Middle School. Emphasis is placed on overall proficiency: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The materials being used are very current; that is, they take into consideration the great cultural and political changes that have been sweeping Russia in recent years. Besides language study, students of Russian also become immersed in learning about the culture, history, geography, literature, and music of Russia.

Students in the ARHS Russian program have been doing exceptionally well in competitions with other High School Russian programs. Each year we compete in an oral contest for New England schools, and in a nation-wide essay contest. The results show us to have one of the strongest programs in the United States, with students winning regional, national, and even international medals every year.

Because of their intense involvement with the language, the majority of our Russian graduates have continued their Russian at the college and university level, whether they majored in it or not. Their having taking Russian often has helped them in their admission to colleges of their choice. These students, as well as their college instructors, often comment on the high quality of the Russian instruction at ARHS, and how helpful that training has been for them.
