Location

London is the capital of Great Britain. London is made up of 33 villages. London is almost twice as big as New York City. The outline of London on a map is compared to that of a squashed tomato. The heart of London is called “The City”. London’s subway is officially called The Underground, but most Londoners call it “The Tube”. The Themes River was the only place where a bridge could be built across the river.

Food

British food is mainly the same as American food, but with some differences. London’s restaurants tend to serve international food. The people in London like fish and chips. Londoners also like tea. A common English (as in London) breakfast usually includes kippers, salmon, sausage, ham, and eggs. That is a lot of food! 4:00 is the regular “Tea time” for people in London. People in London eat cheese a lot.

 

 

 

People

        A variety of people have lived in London.  The population of London is 6.8 million people.  There are many queens that have lived in London.  Here are some of them: Queen Victoria, Queen Elizabeth I, Queen Elizabeth II, and Queen Boudica.  There are also many famous kings that lived in London.  Here are some of them: King George I, King Henry VIII, King Alfred, King Edward and King Charles I.  Some other very famous people have lived in London.  For example, Charles Dickens and Tony Blair.  58% of the people in London were Christian in 2001.

 

Interesting Facts

        London is very interesting.  It is the largest city in Great Britain.  The city motto is Domine Dirge Nos, which means “God guide us.”  The city’s emblem is a dragon.  In 1500, London was one of the biggest seaports in the world.  It is made up of 625 square miles.

  

Famous Places

There are many famous places in LondonBuckingham Palace is the home to many Kings and Queens that have ruled London and many places near it.  Another famous landmark is Big Ben, the well-known clock whose minute hands are 14 feet long.  St. Paul’s Cathedral is located on top of Red Gate Hills.  Its dome has become a symbol of London.  The Houses of Parliament contain 11 courtyards, 100 stair cases, 1,000 rooms and about 2 miles of passages.  There are many parks and gardens in London.  Among them are Hyde Park, Green Park, St. James Park and Kensington Gardens.

 

 Climate

Temperatures vary throughout London. The record temperature in London is 100.4 degrees. London doesn’t get as much rain as all the other places in England, although it does get a lot of rain. In 1990, London was having a mild winter when a freak hurricane hit.  The average temperature is 42-60 degrees Fahrenheit.  In St. James Park alone, 23 inches of rain falls each year.  Not much snow falls in London.
