Dear Wildwood Family and Friends,

Several weeks ago, the Wildwood Library was the lucky recipient of a beautiful, handcrafted book display case. It was made by Steve Bommer and Nat Waring and donated to the children of Wildwood. Steve, the husband of Library Instructional Aide Barbara Cooper, responded to our frustration over not being able to provide a book display case at the right height for our Early Chapter book crowd. The display case is 7 ft. long, made of poplar and stained to match our existing furniture. It now houses our Early Chapter books as well as popular series. The students began flocking to it right away to select their favorite books. Library furniture is outrageously expensive and there is no money for it in the budget. We are most grateful for this generous gift of materials, time and craftsmanship. Please be sure to admire it the next time you are in the library. It is located in front of the picture book section.

At the beginning of March, Wildwood students in grades four through six, who read at least five of the 25 nominated books, voted for their favorite for the Massachusetts Children's Book Award (MCBA).

Results

1stPlace:The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke

2ndPlace: Hoot by Carl Hiaasen

Honor Books:

The Doll People by Ann M. Martin

Double Fudge by Judy Blume

Journey to the River Sea by Eva Ibbotson

Altogether, 90 students cast votes, and we are pleased that all of the classes were represented in the voting. Several of our students, Conlan Brown, Emma Chesner-Grant, Irene Delaney, Madison Hebb and Sophie Ryan, read 23-25 of the nominated books and received gift certificates to the Jeffery Amherst Bookshop as a reward for their efforts. On April 1stwe should receive the results of statewide voting and in June we'll have the list of next year's nominees.

We would like to thank the Wildwood PTO for donating part of the proceeds from the Fall Book Fair to the Wildwood Library. This allows us to take advantage of sales at various local bookstores, especially now in the spring when our book budget has been spent. Our students truly appreciate the steady stream of popular new books that these funds allow us to purchase. Thank you.
