Dear Wildwood Families and Friends,

This month, as always, there is an array of noteworthy Wildwood Library topics to bring to your attention.

Amherst Area Education Alliance Grant

The Amherst School Libraries have been awarded a grant for the next school year from the AAEA for our proposal to provide a parent/guardian library collection in each elementary library. Some of the topics we plan to focus on are parenting skills, child development, special needs, literacy, self-esteem, behavior problems, etc. You will be hearing more about this in the fall; however, I would be happy to take any suggestions you may have at this time. Contact me by phone: 362-1424 or email: edonoghue@arps.org

Massachusetts Children's Book Award

Wildwood students were pleased to hear that their choices for winners for the MCBA 2005 were almost identical to those of the entire state. This is not always the case; however, this year,The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke was the definitive winner. This year students made suggestions for next year's nominees and we eagerly await that list in early June.

Rotary Book Collection

Thank you to all the families who contributed books to the Rotary's book collection during the month of March. The Wildwood Library gathered well over 500 books that Rotary members transported to the Reader-to-Reader program, which distributes books to school libraries across the country. For our participation in the program, the Rotary will present our library with a monetary gift.

School Library Month's Bookmark Contest

The month of April was School Library Month and students in grades 2-4 took part in the Massachusetts School Library Media Association's bookmark contest. The theme was "My library is my link to.." Students created bookmarks showing subjects they feel the library helps them learn about. Some bookmarks were submitted to the state contest and all are on display in the library.

TV Turn-Off Week

The library celebrated TV Turn-Off Week by allowing students to check out unlimited books (as long as they didn't have overdue books) and by reading a variety of books with themes on the (humorous) perils of television viewing. This activity prompted some interesting group discussions.
