Frequently Asked Questions

Books for the Wildwood Library are purchased to support the curriculum and to provide children with leisure reading. Children are encouraged to borrow books, take them home and share them with their families. They may select books during their library visits, before school, after school, and during the day as long as permission to come to the library is given by the classroom teacher. A child does not have to wait until the scheduled library visit to return a book and choose another book, as long as the classroom teacher's policy allows this.

We would like all of the children to be able to enjoy the resources of the library and so it is important that children learn to be responsible users of the materials in the library. This includes taking care of the books, returning them on time and replacing them if need be. Once a child signs out a book and leaves the library with it, he/she is responsible for that book until it is returned to the library.

How many books may be borrowed?

Students in Kindergarten and First Grade may borrow one book at a time. Children in Second Grade may have two books, Third Grade may have three books and so on. Additional books needed for class projects may be borrowed and should be checked out in the student's name, not the teacher's.

What if the book I want is always out?

If someone else has the book you want, ask to have a reserve put on your book. Then we will notify you when the book has been returned and is available to you.

When are books due?

Books borrowed by Kindergarten students are due in one week.
Books borrowed by students in grades 1-6 are due on the first day of the following month (or the first school day after the first of the month). A book borrowed during the month of September will be due on October 1st. During the last week of a month the due date is advanced to the following month. Thus, a book checked out on October 27th will be due on December 1st.

About seven days after the due date has passed, lists of students with overdue books are given to their teachers. About a week later children who have still not returned their books receive individual overdue notices. At this time they may not borrow any books until the overdue books are returned. If a child does not respond to repeated overdue notices, a letter will be sent home.

What if a book is damaged?

Children are instructed in the care of books. Books that are damaged have their lives shortened, are less attractive to use and convey the message to children that books can be mistreated. Therefore, when books are returned in a damaged condition but are repairable and can continue to be used, a $3.00 damage fee will be charged. If a book is damaged beyond repair then the full cost of the book will be charged.

How can we prevent damaged books?

We encourage children to transport their books to and from home in plastic bags inside their backpacks. Forgotten lunches and leaky drinks in backpacks are often the cause of damaged library books. Special care should be taken on rainy and snowy days.

What if a book is lost?

If a book is lost then it must be replaced or paid for by the borrower. In some cases, the library will accept another book in good condition in its place, if it is one we would like to have. This must be cleared with the librarian before such a book is accepted.

What if we think that the book has been returned?

If you think that a book has been returned, let us know and we will check the shelves. You should also check with your child's teacher to see if it is in the classroom. While you are searching for a missing book you may want to restore your child's borrowing privileges by signing a form agreeing to pay for the book if it does not turn up by the end of the school year. These forms are available in the library.

May parents of Wildwood Students borrow books from the library?

Yes, parents may borrow books either accompanied by their children or on their own. Just ask to have your name entered into our patron database. Books may be checked out until the first of the next month, unless a teacher has need of the book for the curriculum.

How can I locate books in the Wildwood Library?

You may use our computer catalog. You will be able to look up books by their title, author or subject. Once you have the call number, refer to the signs in the library to locate the appropriate place. If you have any questions ask the librarian or instructional assistant.

Will the library accept donations of used books or magazines?

Yes, if the books are in good condition and needed by the library. If we find that we do not need them, we will pass them along to classrooms or another good home. Please call before you bring a large number of books to the library. The library usually doesn't accept magazines but many of the teachers in the school like to get them for cutting up. Ask in the office for a notice to be put in the Morning Messages, asking if teachers want your magazines.

What if we are leaving Wildwood and not sure if we have any books?

If your family is going to be leaving, whether temporarily or permanently, be sure to return all library materials before your departure. If you are not sure if your child has any library books, please contact us and we will be able to give you that information.

We hope that this information will be helpful to you in understanding our borrowing policy. We make every effort to make the Wildwood Library an inviting library for the children, staff and Wildwood families. If everyone does their part in taking care of the materials, we will be able to provide a collection that we all can enjoy.
