Dear Wildwood Family and Friends, The new school year brings many new challenges. Luckily, it also brings us the generosity of its community members. A number of you have offered us your help. Once the Wildwood volunteer program gets under way, we will be getting in touch with you. Thank you for thinking of us. On behalf of the Wildwood Library and all of the students and staff of the school, I would like to thank Liz Rosenberry for organizing the Summer Read-a-thon. Liz recognized that with a 50% cut in the library materials budget, the library collection just wouldn’t be the same and everyone would be affected by it. She prepared wonderful Read-a-thon folders for the students in June and followed up on collecting the proceeds this past month. As you enjoy the books that your children bring home this year, think of Liz and the students and families who participated in the Read-a-thon. Because of their hard work and financial support, we will all enjoy the type of library collection that we value. It is heartwarming to see the community come together and support our library. Sincere thanks to all of the participants. Also, thanks to Josu Eguana for the professional help is giving to our library. Josu is a librarian in Spain and will be in Amherst for two months with his family. His expertise in cataloging books has been very welcome. If only he could stay for the year. Thanks also to Cowls Building Supply for donating a huge amount of paint stirring sticks to the library via Peter Jessop. I sent the request in to the Wildwood Wire on Thursday evening and on Friday morning at 9am, lo and behold, they appeared. You may wonder why we wanted them. Check with your children in a few weeks. Once again this year I am on the steering committee for Amherst Reads: A Literary Festival. On October 29th at the Jones Library from 12-4pm, your children are invited to participate in an event filled day to celebrate reading, literacy and the books of award winning author Jon Scieszka. He is known for his Time Warp Trio series, The Stinky Cheese Man, Math Curse, Science Verse, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, and others. Megan Lambert, from the Eric Carle Museum, was a recent guest at the Wildwood Library presenting Jon Scieszka’s books and telling students in some classes about Amherst Reads. All students will be introduced to his books in the next month. More details about the day’s events will follow. Be sure to save the date. |
