PARENT AND GUARDIAN INVOLVEMENT IN THE SCHOOLS

The School Committees endorse the concept that participation by Parents and Guardians in the planning, programs and activities of the schools is one of the essential components of a continuing effort to improve the educational opportunities and experiences of all students. The School Committee therefore expects the following:

1. A Parent and Guardian Advisory Council or similar advisory group, to exist in each school to work closely with the Principal and staff in efforts to support and improve the school programs and activities.
    
2. Structured and unstructured opportunities for Parents and Guardians to hear and see descriptions and explanations of the instructional programs offered at every school.
    
3. Opportunities for Parents and Guardians to visit individually the schools and classrooms at times, with appropriate procedures.
    
4. A minimum of one and a maximum of two Parent or Guardian volunteers, one selected at random to serve as a member(s) of all interviewing teams used in the selection process for recommending persons to the Superintendent for appointment as teachers and administrators. Teachers who work at the same building as the open position cannot serve as Parent or Guardian. This also excludes School Committee members who are also Parents and Guardians; it shall be the purview of the Chair to appoint a school committee member to all interview committees for building and Central Office administrators. 
   1. A notice shall come out from the Superintendent’s or principal’s office inviting Parent or Guardian volunteers to submit their names, allowing submissions for a minimum of ten business days to encourage volunteers. Any selected volunteers will have to be able to commit to attend all interviews.
